Sonos has introduced its most significant software update in years, Sonos 27, along with two new premium products: the Beam Ultra soundbar and the Ace Ultra headphones. This initiative represents the company’s continued effort to transform a home’s audio setup into a unified system rather than a group of separate components. Sonos CEO Tom Conrad described the update as the next phase in a two-decade plan to develop an operating system tailored for home audio, one that responds to user habits and hardware specifications.

The free Sonos 27 update delivers four key improvements: AI-driven voice commands, Sonos Fabric—a system enabling speakers to detect and adjust to one another—a redesigned mobile application, and new hardware releases. While the software upgrade applies to existing Sonos S2 devices, certain features, such as headphone linking, require the Ace Ultra headphones.

AI integration and open compatibility

Sonos is incorporating two new AI control methods. Sonos 27voice functions as a specialized assistant for music and atmosphere-based instructions, while Sonos 27mcp (Model Context Protocol) allows users to connect external AI applications to their setup. The first confirmed partner is ChatGPT, enabling users to modify volume, switch tracks, or relocate audio between rooms without exiting the chat platform. Sonos operates a public MCP server, meaning any AI tool compatible with the protocol can integrate after receiving user authorization.

Additionally, Sonos previewed Sonos Custom Agents, a forthcoming feature that will enable users to create personalized AI assistants with unique voices and behaviors. A release timeline has not been established, but the company stressed that these tools will not function independently—they will only respond to explicit user instructions.

Sonos Fabric serves as the foundation for many of the new capabilities. It allows speakers to identify one another and adjust roles automatically. For instance, a Sonos Move 2 or Play portable speaker can act as a rear surround channel when positioned correctly, producing a full 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos configuration without manual adjustments.

This technology also powers headphone linking, an early-access feature available exclusively with the Ace Ultra. With a single button press, users can smoothly transition audio between their headphones and a Sonos speaker without needing a phone.

The new hardware: Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra

The Beam Ultra replaces the standard Beam soundbar with a more advanced 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup. It incorporates nine drivers, including upward-firing tweeters for height effects, a forward-focused mid-tweeter for dialogue clarity, and side-firing horn-loaded tweeters for improved stereo separation. The soundbar also features AI Speech Enhancement with four adjustable settings and a Night Sound mode that reduces loud peaks while amplifying quieter dialogue for late-night viewing.

Measuring 29.53 inches wide, 2.56 inches tall, and 4.1 inches deep, the Beam Ultra weighs 6.35 pounds and is available in black or white matte finishes. It supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, HDMI eARC/ARC (with a cable included), and USB-C. The company highlighted its sustainability improvements: 24% recycled materials, nearly half its plastic replaced with recycled alternatives, and 25% lower idle power consumption compared to the standard Beam. The Sonos Ace Ultra is the company’s latest over-ear headphone, designed around a custom 40mm driver per ear cup that supports spatial audio and lossless streaming via aptX Lossless. It includes a ten-microphone array for Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), delivering roughly double the performance of the original Ace at key frequencies. An Aware mode lets users selectively allow ambient sound with a single press.

Adaptive EQ adjusts sound in real time based on ear cup seal and fit, complementing manual 3-band or 8-band EQ controls in the app. Battery life reaches up to 35 hours with ANC enabled, with rapid charging providing three hours of playback from just three minutes of charge. The headphones weigh 0.71 pounds and come in Black, Soft White, Agave, or Sand finishes.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth 6.0 (with SBC, AAC, and aptX Adaptive Lossless support) and USB-C for wired connections. Pricing starts at $449 in the U.S., with regional pricing:

Release timeline and key milestones

The Sonos 27 software features begin rolling out on September 8, 2026, including the updated app interface, Sonos 27mcp in early access, and portable surrounds. The Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra will launch globally on September 29, 2026, with headphone linking available as an early-access feature for Ace Ultra users.

Pricing for the UAE and wider GCC regions remains unconfirmed, though the hardware follows the same global release date. The update and new products reflect Sonos’s long-term vision of a unified home audio system, where devices operate together rather than in isolation.

Future updates will likely expand compatibility and refine the integration between hardware and software. The Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra represent the first major steps in this direction, with upcoming improvements expected to further merge individual devices into a cohesive system.
